Although he'd only worked a month in the restaurant industry before opening Flavor91 Burger Bistro with his mom and sister, Moses Hayelom was well prepped to open his Whitehall eatery in September of 2016.
A business marketing degree, a strategy for hiring people smarter than him and a heart for hospitalitygave him exactly what he needed to serve up locally sourced burgers and vegan fare with a hint of his Ethiopian heritage. We asked him about his favorites around town.
Dive Bar: “Arch City Tavern. It's intimate. And they seem to be on top of what they're serving. They put a lot of care and knowledge into their food. They're really personable when it comes to customer service.”
Vietnamese: “Indochine Café. I like their service and their attention to detail. Their food is on point, literally every, single time. I get com chien ga. It's chicken-fried rice and sautéed onions.”
Comfort Food: “Family Affair, in Groveport. They're down to earth and classy at the same time. They've got a good mac 'n' cheese.”
Special Occasion: “TAT on Livingston. That they're family owned speaks to me, always. Their food makes me feel like I'm eating something freshly made in Sicily. I feel like I've been fed by an Italian grandmother.”
Brewery: “2 Tones Brewing Co. All their beers are on point. I like their Uncle Joe's Irish Red Ale. And I like their 2 Tones IPA, as well.”
