Zaftig Brewing Co.'s Shadowed Mistress

Style: American Strong Ale

ABV: 9%

It should be no surprise that Zaftig, a brewery named for the Yiddish term for “full-bodied,” produces hefty beers with amped-up flavors and levels of booze. While its Shadowed Mistress strong ale doesn't push the alcohol-by-volume spectrum as high as other Zaftig brews, it sits comfortably at a warming 9 percent ABV. The beer pours a deep black; its boozy bite is hidden by a caramel and dark fruit center with slightly bitter hop overtones. —Nicholas Dekker

Eat This: Dan the Baker's Thanksgiving Croissant

I don't get super excited about limited-release items like pumpkin spice lattes or the McRib. But there is one ephemeral food item that has me checking Instagram daily: Dan the Baker's Thanksgiving Croissant. Inspired by Christina Tosi's Milk Bar in New York City, baker extraordinaire Dan Riesenberger layers stuffing-seasoned croissant dough with Ohio-sourced turkey and house-made cranberry sauce. The sage-flavored pastry is the perfect prelude to the real event on Nov. 23. Available only through November, Thanksgiving Croissants run $12 each, but are easily a breakfast or lunch on their own. You can find them at Dan the Baker's charming Toast Bar (open Friday through Sunday) at 1028 Ridge St. —Erin Edwards
