Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.
Navya Parsa and Navin Muni’s wedding took place on Aug. 5, 2017, at the Hilton Columbus at Easton.
If you could do anything about your wedding differently, what would you change and why?
I would make a few changes to the timeline of [the day]. If you have a bridal party getting makeup done, be sure to have multiple makeup artists at your event so that things get finished in time for pictures!
What are you happy you spent money on?
Having high-quality memories of our wedding was important to us. We were happy to have a great team! Additionally, making sure our guests had a great time was priority. I’m glad we spent money on food, alcohol and a great DJ.
What do you think you could have done without?
I’m not sure there was anything I could have done without. I was pretty realistic in what would be extraneous. Instead of doing favors on tables, we had a snack and tea/coffee room as well as a breakfast room that was open to our guests throughout the weekend.
What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?
How smoothly everything went! And how absolutely accommodating and nice everyone is to you while planning your big day.
What do you wish you'd known before you started planning?
It will always be stressful no matter how much time you take to plan, so try not to worry too much.
Did you experience any wedding-day snafus?
I had a traditional Indian wedding and I ordered fresh jasmine flowers for my hair. However, when they arrived on the day of, they had wilted and were brown. We decided to use a different flower for my hair and my florist made hair pins out of white and red roses to use as well. It worked beautifully!
Any dress shopping advice?
When you find your dress, you will just know! I shopped in India for two weeks for outfits for my five events. It took the longest for me to find my wedding sari, but when I found it, I knew it was exactly what I had envisioned.
Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?
Things will always turn out perfectly. Expect mishaps, but don’t sweat it—no one remembers them.
Do you have any general marriage advice, as a newlywed?
Understand your partner’s communication style, and don’t always expect it to be the same as yours.
