Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.
Chelsey Scott and Sonny Unverferth’s wedding took place on Oct. 13, 2017, at Juniper.
If you could do anything about your wedding differently, what would you change and why?
I would have gone on our honeymoon very soon after the wedding. With all the craziness of planning and the wedding day, an immediate getaway would have been nice.
What are you happy you spent money on?
A live band—The Bicho Brothers rocked!
What do you think you could have done without?
The guestbook. No one signs those anymore!
What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?
How much time and dedication it takes to plan a wedding. We only had two months, so we had to plan fast.
What do you wish you'd known before you started planning?
To prepare for an emotional rollercoaster.
Did you experience any wedding-day snafus?
We forgot to figure out transportation from the Renaissance Hotel, where we took first-look photos, to Juniper, our wedding venue. So Sonny and I Ubered to our own wedding.
Any dress shopping advice?
I went dress shopping with just my mom, and it was a wonderful, low-key experience. Shopping with a crew can get stressful! Plus, it made for a special mother-daughter memory. Also, be careful with who you pick to do your alterations. I had a bad experience and didn't receive my dress until the day before my wedding.
Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?
Try not to get too caught up in the details.
Do you have any general marriage advice, as a newlywed?
Laugh whenever possible.
