How a local author planned a wedding with all the “write” stuff
We don’t often cover real weddings that weren’t in the print version of the magazine, but Roxanne and Christopher Sams’ story is too cute to pass up.
You might know Roxanne Sams by her nom de plume—R.L. Walker. The middle school teacher has written several YA fiction books, including “The Disappearing Act,” “Carnival Runaway” and “Kai’s Secret.” So it’s no surprise that her wedding included a strong literary theme and venue.
“I thought a cool place for an author to get married would be at her local library,” Roxanne says. “I loved being able to marry my best friend in my childhood library, where I have been able to donate books that I have written.”
Roxanne has spent the last two years sharing her writing process with her students at South-Western City Schools, which she says has encouraged many of them to write more. She’s also formed a writing club for students who want to pursue novel-writing. “My goal is for them to publish on Amazon, with parental approval, by the end of the school year,” she says.
In addition to the obvious literary theme, Roxanne and Christopher’s wedding also honored their love of travel. (Christopher proposed while the pair were vacationing in Belize in early 2018.) Maps and globes joined the books and book-page confetti that decorated their reception.
