Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.

The Hojnowskis’ wedding took place on Nov. 3, 2018, at the Columbus Athenaeum.

If you could do anything about your wedding differently, what would you change and why?

Brandi: I loved my dress, but I might have searched around more to find one I loved [that was] cheaper.

Kyle: I would have had Brandi feed me a couple of extra bites of that cake! Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing.

What are you happy you spent money on?

B: Photographer/videographer—we reviewed a lot of websites prior to picking a company. You truly get what you pay for in this department.

K: There will be other fancy meals and times to buy fancy clothes. But investing in quality photography and videography was a must. Match with the right people and you’ll enjoy your special day rather than worrying about how it will be captured.

What do you think you could have done without?

B: Koozies, but we had a vision and really wanted them. In the end they didn’t come out perfect, but we got a great discount.

K: Some of the upgraded suit accessories such as expensive studs and cufflinks probably weren’t worth it. They hid under my suit for a good part of the day and who knows when I’ll use them again.

What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?

K: How expensive a wedding could be. There is always a bigger, better, shinier option out there somewhere. It’s important to be aligned with your partner on what is truly valuable.

What do you wish you’d known before you started planning?

B: You can’t make everyone happy, and you shouldn’t have to; it is your wedding.

Did you and your fiancé get into any silly arguments?

K: There was nothing to argue over. We were there to marry each other, and everything else was just a detail.

B: The wedding planning process is stressful, but we were generally on the same page when it came to what we were must-haves and fun-to-haves for the wedding.

Any dress-shopping advice?

B: You will probably hate the first few dresses you try on, so don’t get discouraged.

What about menswear?

K: Give yourself plenty of time. Order garments in advance to allow for tailoring and any other unexpected events.

Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?

B: Be realistic about your budget and do your research prior to starting, so you know how much the various parts of the wedding will cost.

K: Spend within your limits and identify needs versus wants—it will make all the little steps more enjoyable. Relax and appreciate your wedding day, because it goes by quickly!
