Real newlyweds give wedding planning tips based on their experience.

Joy married Tom Russell on Sept. 14, 2018, at North Bank Park Pavilion.

If you could do anything about your wedding differently, what would you change and why?

I wish I could have changed the weather. We got married Sept. 14, and it was 80 degrees! Beautiful day, but I was dying after all of our pictures and thankful for the cool limo to relax in beforehand.

What are you happy you spent money on?

We splurged on the photographer and venue, but it was totally worth it! Those were two areas we weren’t willing to compromise quality in.

What do you think you could have done without?

We had so much going on at our wedding (ice cream truck, outdoor games, photo booth, s’mores bar, dancing) that it seemed like not everyone did everything, but that’s OK. We wanted to cater to each individual at our wedding, and I think that at least a handful of people enjoyed each little aspect of it.

What was your biggest surprise when planning your wedding?

How simple the actual planning was. I was worried not everything would come together as easy as it did, but was grateful it all worked together relatively smoothly.

Did you experience any wedding-day snafus?

I personally didn’t, but my husband did. He “lost” his shoes, aka, left them in his truck. Thanks to great family and friends, they were located.

Do you have any general advice for couples currently planning their weddings?

Enjoy the process. That was the best advice given to me. There can be so much tension with family trying to please everyone, but you can’t. So just enjoy the process.

Do you have any general marriage advice, as a newlywed?

Enjoy each other! We are loving this new time in our lives to the max. It’s the simple things, like sharing a home together and starting a life together.
