Each week, we feature a couple from our latest issue.

Sarah and Jeff Hackett have known each other since elementary school, but their age gap—four school grades—meant they never crossed paths socially. After college, Sarah’s roommate realized that the two would be a perfect match; she was dating Jeff’s friend at the time and played matchmaker, sneakily finding a way for the four of them to hang out. “After a few ugly sweater parties and some playing hard-to-get, we both finally decided to give it a shot,” Sarah says.

“The day Jeff proposed was one of the best days of my life,” she continues. “We had reservations at The Guild House in the Short North and had planned to stay in a hotel that evening. I knew something special was in the making that day. He proposed after dinner, and our server instantly brought over Champagne! It was romantic and perfect.”

Sarah had some sneaky romance moves up her own sleeve at the wedding, too. She and Jeff asked their DJ to do the standard “couple’s dance,” wherein all couples begin dancing to a song and gradually are asked to sit out based on how long—or rather, not so long—they’ve been together. When Sarah’s grandparents, who have been married 65 years, were the last ones standing, the DJ played their wedding song … just as Sarah and Jeff had planned.

“It was a special moment for the family,” Sarah recalls.
