Local wedding vendors you should know

There’s a reason the Street Players are a go-to band for weddings and other celebrations in Central Ohio: They’ve been doing it for decades, says frontman John Pollock. With an ever-expanding repertoire of songs ranging from classic rock to the latest hits, the multipiece band features Pollock on sax, Mark Morrison on trumpet and trombone, Bob Everhart on trumpet and flugelhorn, Jeff Huston on drums, Joe Roberts on guitar, Rick Markle on bass and Steve Stabile on keyboard. Pollock tells us more about the band in our Q&A below.

How did you get your start in music?

My father played—and continues to play—trumpet in a band, providing me with a front-row seat and an invaluable example of how hard work, commitment and dedication to music can move entire audiences, bring joy to people and create energy, fun and ever lasting memories.

Who are the Street Players?

Street Players is a band of seven professional musicians who also sing. From a musicianship standpoint, our four-member rhythm section (drummer, bassist, keyboardist and guitarist) accompanies our three-member horn section (trumpet, trombone and saxophone). The education, training, experience, talent and hard work across these members has spawned opportunities for this band and these musicians to perform with The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Drifters, The Coasters, Frankie Valli, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Lesley Gore, Peter Noone  and Herman’s Hermits, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Each of these experiences broadened Street Players’ performance portfolio and elevated our delivery.

What sets you apart from other live wedding bands?

Consistency. Commitment. Experience. Flexibility. The seven members of Street Players have been consistently performing together for more than 25 years! This consistency of musicianship and membership has enabled the band to expand repertoire, orchestrate instrumental and vocal arrangements, and deliver a rehearsed and exact rendition of each song. Each performance is unique and tailored to align with the client’s wishes and expectations, and our own sound and lighting technicians provide production at every event, ensuring that our sound is professional and consistent.

Lastly, Street Players entertains audiences—we don’t just play music. We are very interactive with our audiences and we always ensure that brides and grooms are recognized throughout the celebration at a level that is comfortable for them.

What can couples expect when they hire you?

Brides and grooms can expect a planning process leading up to the event date that is positive, stress-free and enjoyable, with idea-sharing and coaching based on our experience that spans hundreds of events. On the day of the event, Street Players will arrive and complete setup prior to the arrival of your guests, wear formal attire, provide various live music options throughout each segment of the event, and ensure that our versatility, energy, experience and professionalism brings everyone to their feet, puts a smile on their face and leaves them with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

What’s something about live bands that you wish more couples knew?

In most cases, a wedding reception is the largest party that any couple will ever plan for all of their family and friends. From our perspective and based on years of performances, we have found that the No. 1 concern of our clients is that each of their guests shares in a fun and memorable celebration. Additionally, we have found that most guests rarely remember some of the peripheral elements of your wedding such as what the decorations looked like or what they ate for dinner. But they always remember how much fun they had, and that there was a fabulous live band playing throughout the night that provided them with music to listen and dance to, and a performance to watch when their feet needed to rest.

We are constantly running into people that experienced a “Street Players wedding” years ago and the first thing that they always say is, “Wow, what a party! We had so much fun!” So, early in the planning stages, when you are striving to piece together your wedding puzzle, focus on the elements of your day that will ensure that you and your guests have more fun at your wedding than any other celebration that they have attended or will attend in the future.

Are prospective clients able to see the band perform at public venues prior to booking?

Yes, absolutely! As a band local to Columbus, we strive to ensure that our calendar provides many opportunities for prospective clients, friends, family and fans alike to share in an evening of music and dancing with us at many of Central Ohio’s best venues. We encourage anyone interested in seeing the band perform to visit the calendar on our website to view a list of upcoming performance dates and times. The party doesn’t truly start until you arrive!
