Local wedding vendors you should know
Every time we talk to Sue and Gary Baisden, we learn something new and exciting about the husband-and-wife duo behind Capital City Cakes. For example: Did you know they were on an episode of Bake It Like Buddy? While they didn’t take home any top honors for that show, the couple have been among the top Central Ohio bakers for decades. We sat down with Sue, the head decorator behind every gorgeous wedding cake that the shop puts out, to learn even more about the business.
What should folks know about you?
SB: For more than 30 years, I have been baking and decorating wedding cakes and desserts for the special occasions of family and friends. Thanks to my delectable recipes and eye for beauty, my talent was consistently in high demand, so I eventually started a bakery out of my home. My identity was defined by my classy, elegant style, incredibly moist cakes and buttercream made from the finest ingredients. Gary and I opened our first storefront thanks to an increasing demand.
How long has Capital City Cakes been around?
SB: We first opened our doors in Bexley on March 21, 2009. In January 2012, we moved to Grove City, expanded the store size and developed a team of bakers, designers and customer service employees. This location, in Town Center, offers more space and a large courtyard with live music in the summer.
What else should we know about the bakery?
SB: Capital City Cakes has been featured multiple times in the local and national media and TV shows, garnering attention for our distinct designs and from-scratch buttercream. Plus, our cake artists and designers love a challenge and can create the cake of your dreams!
What sets you apart from other bakers in the area?
SB: Our motto is, “If you can dream it, we can make it a cake!” The sky’s the limit in creating your dream wedding cake, from gorgeous all-buttercream cakes with fresh flower bouquets to elaborate and intricate piping to over-the-top fondant creations.
What can couples expect when they hire you?
SB: Extreme professionalism, including more than 30 years’ wedding experience; friendly, “you’re part of our family” service; and award-winning flavors and designs.
What’s something about wedding cakes that you wish more people knew?
SB: Wedding cakes can be delivered anywhere! We have delivered cakes to Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia and nearly every county of Ohio.
What are other couples saying about Capital City Cakes?
SB: We get so many compliments, and we love hearing from happy customers. Here are a few of our favorites:
Capital City Cakes did a fantastic job on both our wedding cake and the groom’s cake! They traveled about an hour to bring everything to us and a beautiful setup. The cake was delicious (snickerdoodle and almond) and exactly as we had asked. The guests have been raving about it ever since and I’ll guarantee some of them have gone to the bakery to get another few pieces since the wedding. Thanks so much to Sue and the staff!
Still, to this day, the very best wedding cake I ever had was our own from Capital City Cakes—and I’m very particular about cake so it’s not like I’m just biased. One of our “health-nut” guests even had FIVE pieces because it was just that good! Love Capital City Cakes and refer all my friends to them!
I’ve purchased many cakes from Capital City Cakes over the past few years and am continually impressed! The attention to detail is phenomenal, and no matter the flavor I get it is always a crowd-pleaser. Thanks Capital City Cakes for once again going above and beyond expectations!
