Each week, we feature a couple from our latest issue.
High school sweethearts Chelsea Austen and Matthew Mattingly started dating in 2006, continuing long-distance through college and part of graduate school. In 2013, the couple moved into an apartment in Columbus together, finished graduate school, adopted a dog and started planning to travel the world.
After dating for almost 11 years, Matthew proposed to Chelsea on their first trip to Ireland, at Mizen Head. Thinking Matthew was kneeling to rest from the hike, Chelsea was taken by surprise. As it turns out, the location for the proposal was a discovery even to Matthew. “He did not have the place planned ahead,” Chelsea remembers, “he was simply waiting to be alone in a beautiful place with the person he loved.”
Chelsea and Matthew were engaged for just under two years before marrying at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. “Our one goal for planning our wedding was to keep it uniquely us,” Chelsea says. Goal achieved; their ceremony included personal touches such as music from “The Princess Bride” during the bridesmaids’ processional, a reading from Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist” and a hand-fasting ceremony as a nod to their engagement in Ireland.
