Hocking Hills Wedding Chapel took first place in the Ohio Destination Wedding category.
Hocking Hills is the perfect backdrop for the adventurous couple looking to escape into nature with their family and friends on their wedding day, so it’s no surprise that Hocking Hills Wedding Chapel was chosen by readers as the spot to host an Ohio destination wedding. Located only 40 miles from John Glenn International Airport in Columbus, this wedding venue is easy for guests to get to and offers full-service packages to help with planning.
Owners Karen and Eric Thompson have been hosting weddings on the property since 2002 and now host around 100 weddings a year at the Hocking Hills Wedding Chapel. Although weddings are a large part of their business now, the Thompsons didn’t start out with plans to open a wedding venue. In 1997, the couple built their first cabin to host travelers staying in Hocking Hills and went on to build one every year after, Karen says.
In 2002, they built and began operating the Hocking Hills Wedding Chapel for small elopements and weddings with up to 55 guests. Today the couple owns and operates 14 cabins on the property through Valley View Cabins and have added a second wedding venue on the property, called The Barn at Rush Creek, which can host up to 250 guests.
Karen explains that couples are attracted to their venue because of its proximity to Columbus and the airport, the wide range of packages they offer and, of course, the beauty and atmosphere of Hocking Hills. “A lot of our brides are more nature-oriented, and it’s a much more low-key atmosphere,” Karen says.
Couples can also choose to make the wedding festivities last all weekend by hosting guests in the nearby cabins and planning activities such as canoeing, hiking and sightseeing around the area. Because entrance into the Hocking Hills parks is free, adding these extra activities can be a fairly inexpensive way for the couple to enhance the experience for their guests and themselves.
