Pistacia Vera took first place in the Baker, Other Desserts category.
Since launching Pistacia Vera Pastry Kitchen and Café 16 years ago, brother and sister founders and co-owners Spencer Budros and Anne Fletcher have won an ardent following among Central Ohioans with their artisanal, innovative and always-made-by-hand baked goods. Along with those of us simply seeking to satisfy a sweet tooth, area brides and grooms to be have long flocked to the German Village sweets shop.
Whether stocking up for a shower, rehearsal or reception, couples will find a bounty of goodies from which to choose. Some couples forego traditional cakes altogether in favor of the bakery’s offerings, including the berry cassis flourless torte or Chocolate Bombe. Couples who wish to supplement, but not replace, their cake are free to select from an assortment of Parisian macarons—nut meringue cookies available with a variety of enticing fillings, from brown sugar cinnamon oat to dairy-free Syrah poached pear to plain old pistachio, that can be stacked in a stunning display. Let’s call it having your cake—and adding to it, too.
This year, Budros received national recognition for his confectionary creations in the form of a semifinalist spot among the coveted James Beard Awards. He was the only Ohio pastry chef nominated for Outstanding Baker in the culinary honor program.
