While public school districts in Cuyahoga Falls open their doors for students on Aug. 16, area private schools will get an extra week of summer, as they return to the classroom on Aug. 23.

Chapel Hill Christian School North

Students and teachers with memories of sweltering last summer in class will be happy to know that relief has been brought into the classrooms.

"We are beyond thrilled that air conditioning is being installed in the classrooms," said Principal Cathy Shafer. "This will be such a delight and blessing to students and faculty."

Lunch this year will be eaten in the school gym, Shafer said.

"It will enable all to move about and take care of this vital part of the day," she said. "After all, most children state that lunch and recess are their favorite parts of the school day."

Families are reminded that the school’s new uniform logo "will be required on the boy’s shirts and girl’s jumpers," Shafer said. Kids Kloset in Cuyahoga Falls carries those, she added.

The school’s theme this year is "Walk by the Holy Spirit," said Shafer.

"We will be emphasizing the fruit of the Spirit from Galatians — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control," she said. "Each month of the school year will have a focus. August and September is when we will learn more about loving God and loving one another."

School for first- through sixth-grade starts Aug. 23. Preschool and prekindergarten classes have a staggered start between Aug. 23 and 25.

School begins at 8:55 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Parents should call 330-929-1901 to report an absence.

St. Joseph Parish School

St. Joseph school is expanding its Chromebook program this year, said Melissa Messina-Rodgers, development and communications.

"In addition to our seventh- and eighth-grade students having their own Chromebooks, our sixth-graders will also be one-on-one with Chromebooks," said Messina-Rodgers. "As well, we have added Chromebook stations to the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms. Our preschool through second grades will continue to use iPads. All PreK through eighth-grade students will continue to have technology classes in the technology lab, which is outfitted with 30 PCs."

Also, St. Joseph has added an X-Stream learning lab for first through eighth grades, and Junior Makerspace for the preschool through kindergarten students, Messina-Rodgers said.

"The highlight to these rooms is the Clevertouch that has been installed in each of these rooms," she said. "Clevertouch is a 65-inch touchscreen run on the Android OS that acts as both a Smartboard and Tablet. Teachers use as a chalk board, but can also download apps onto the board for additional learning experiences. For the younger children, the board on its swing stand can be made into a table where preschool through kindergarten students can stand around and work on up to six different learning games simultaneously."

In addition, the school also has a new dress code policy, Messina-Rodgers said. For details, visit www.saintjoe.org/dresscode.

Messina-Rodgers said parents "should ensure they complete all forms and provide their email and cell numbers."

"Most communication is done via email and One Call," she said. "These two methods are most timely."

The first day of school is Aug. 23. For details on volunteer opportunities, the school calendar, supply list and more, visit www.saintjoe.org online.
