Members of Columbus youth orchestra to perform with Ukrainian violinist

On Thursday, Oct. 3, renowned Ukrainian violinist Assia Ahhatt will take her new show, “A Music Extravaganza,” to the Lincoln Theatre. Ahhatt’s touring production brings young musicians from local schools onto the stage to perform with her at each stop, and the Lincoln concert will feature several violinists from the Urban Strings Columbus Youth Orchestra.

It’s not the first time members of Urban Strings have been on the big stage. The orchestra performs about 35 times a year at venues that range from libraries to concert halls, and at events such as the 2013 inauguration of former state Auditor Dave Yost. The full ensemble includes nearly 50 kids ages 7 to 18 and was founded in 2007 by Catherine Willis, as covered in the July issue of Columbus Monthly.

They will join Ahhatt, a classically trained violinist who was a prodigy in her native Kiev, Ukraine, according to a release. She has recorded several original songs that charted on Billboard, and her last album, All-In, includes 13 violin covers of hits like “Kiss From a Rose” and “Somebody to Love.” Tickets to the show at the Lincoln start at $30.
