Bar profile: O'Shaughnessy's Public House
It seems the Arena District's Irish pub has come down with red, white and blue baseball fever. When the Clippers throw out the first pitch at Huntington Park on Saturday, O'Shaughnessy's Public House plans to put out the welcome mat for the neighborhood's new sports fans.
"We're very excited about the Clippers starting up here," said Mandy Cummings, pub manager.
O'Shaughnessy's may be a short walk from the new stadium, but the bar wants to make sure patrons have plenty of time to slurp down a Guinness before heading to a ballgame. Beginning this weekend, the pub will run a shuttle van from their doors to Huntington Park.
Like they do for Blue Jackets matches, the pub will offer Clippers game-day drink specials along with new baseball-inspired cocktails, Cummings said.
Nestled beside Nationwide Arena, O'Shaughnessy's already draws a hearty crowd for hockey games. The ambiance inside the pub, however, is far from a typical sports bar.
Soft yellow walls, checkered glass windows and farmhouse decor lend a welcoming air to the winding dark-wood bar inside; most everything was built in Ireland then shipped over here. The addition of flat-screen TVs around the pub last month boosted their sports-gazing cred.
Great for settling in, the bar's delectable drafts include Strongbow, Magic Hat HIPA, Great Lake's seasonal and O'Shaughnessy's "Dam" Good Porter ($5.50), a dark, surprisingly hoppy beer from Columbus Brewing. Premium drafts drop to $4 during happy hour.
During weekends or events, O'Shaughnessy's pulls in a bustling, eclectic group of late-twentysomethings and up; it's not unusual for the two-tiered dinning areas to be packed as well as the bar.
"In the summer we'll have really busy lunches - the patio just gets filled up," Cummings said.
Daily lunch deals, like the Salmon Cesar Wrap ($7), and dinner specials bring in a low-key Downtown crowd. The bar's menu consists of Irish staples and top-tier pub grub. The "Dam" Good Fish and Chips ($13) lives up to its name - the fresh cod is served crisp with a Harp beer batter.
Popular entrees include the Corned Beef Hash ($13) - a homestyle brisket with potatoes and scallions, topped with eggs - and the Pecan-Encrusted Salmon ($18), two fillets sauteed, drizzled with a sweet orange glaze and served on a potato pancake.
Patrons looking for ballpark-style fare will be glad to know the pub plans to serve Bahama Mamas courtesy of Schmidt's. Next to these sought-after sausages, hot dogs are child's play.
