5 O'Clock Somewhere: Flannagan's Dublin
Plenty of bars in town offer a place to kick up your feet and relax, but don't expect to get too lazy at Flannagan's Dublin.
If you couldn't make it to that big Huntington Beach bash this year, the city's premier sand volleyball bar has you covered. Walk in from the parking lot, which was packed to the gills at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and experience a spring break that never stops.
Nearly all the action happens on a large first-floor patio. This sunny expanse holds 13 courts with tight nets and beautiful sand - not the gray, gravelly stuff that often finds its way beneath the tape in Central Ohio.
Within the two rows of courts are tables for suntanned teams to await their turn and sip bottles of beer from icy metal buckets, the official beer transport of summer.
If you're wary of an errant spike to the temple, head to a great upper-deck viewing area covered with holiday lights or an airy indoor lodge with plenty of hi-def TVs. Wherever you are, the bar celebrates bathing suits, sandals and a laid-back summer vibe.
There's no happy hour at Flannagan's. It's more like a happy season.
Volleyball specials are available at all times and include discounted shots, domestic and imported beers and mixed drinks. Though plastic bottles aren't always the tastiest, you'll be more than lubricated enough to play your next game or watch live bands every Friday and Saturday.
Leagues occupy courts during peak hours Sunday through Thursday. If you're not signed up, try the Friday night mixer, with pickup matches aplenty for players of varying skill levels. You can sign up to play a single night for $7.
To get more regular action, registration for the fall volleyball session, running six weeks, remains open until Sept. 24 and costs $195 per team of six or more players. Fall cornhole leagues will start the week of Sept. 21, and the cost is $30.
During colder months, Flannagan's slims operation to Friday and Saturday nights. Until those darker days, it's a solid bet for a little sand and sun.
