Mixologist: Bernadette Celio of Flatiron Bar & Diner

Staff Writer
Columbus Alive

Neighborhood: German Village

Hometown: Youngstown

Years behind the bar: 5

How did you get into bartending?

I served during my years in undergrad and I guess the next step was to bartend. It's more conducive to my personality because it's more laid-back. It's good for someone my age. I'm not ready for a nine-to-fiver yet.

What was your major in undergrad?

I majored in philosophy with a minor in sociology. I just like looking at things from multiple perspectives and not having one set view on things - being able to get the whole picture.

What would you be doing if you weren't bartending?

I'd probably go back to school. That's kind of my ultimate goal, but it's just not the best time right now.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?

I play guitar and I write songs. Not so much recently, but I've done a lot of open-mic nights. I have a lot of friends around town that are in bands, so I like to go see live music.

What the best show you've seen recently?

Recently, I saw Two Cow Garage play at Rumba. I'm a big fan of them. Metric was a really good show at the Newport.

Where do you like to go for open-mic nights?

The Treehouse has a really good one on Wednesday nights. For a while they were doing one at the High Beck, which is nice because I'm in German Village.

Where do you go to grab a drink?

I like low-key places. Usually I'll go to Thurman Cafe or Easy Street Cafe. I go to Press Grill a lot after work. A lot of us from here go there, especially since they have food late at night. I'm always looking for somewhere to eat when I get off work.

What do you drink?

For shots, I like Irish whiskey. If I'm sipping on it, I'm a big fan of vodka sodas. I love vodka. I'll drink pretty much anything but gin.

What's the crowd like here at Flatiron?

We get a lot of business people for happy hour. We have a really good happy hour. We have a lot of regular clientele here. And of course we get convention center and hockey game business. It's definitely a winter bar because it's nice and cozy. We get really busy during the winter.
