Neighborhood: Short North

Years behind the bar: 9

How did you get into bartending?

I started barbacking at Wall Street many years ago when I was going to school for undergrad. I stayed there for about four years, and when I moved to Brooklyn I was bartending for catering events in Queens - Jewish weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs.

I came back here and needed a job right away and happened to get in here pretty quick.

What did you study in school?

I went to Ohio State for social work.

Is that what you'd be doing if you weren't bartending?

No, as soon as I did my internship I knew I wanted nothing to do with it. But it was too far in [to the degree] to turn back, so I just finished it out.

I'm still looking for full-time jobs, but there's nothing really that had a calling for me. So I bang my head against the wall trying to figure that out. I love politics, but I think I'm a little too intense over issues to step foot into it.

What do you do when you're not at work?

I like to go out to eat. I love cooking dinner at home with my significant other. I'm, like, a wannabe foodie. I have a pug that I'm obsessed with. She's eight years old, so I'm spending a lot of time with her and babying her.

Where do you like to go out to dinner?

I normally stick in the neighborhood. I think Rigsby's is the best in the neighborhood. Sometimes I'll wander over to Marcella's or Rossi.

Where do you like to get a drink?

Here, normally. I live literally right next door, so I'm always down here.

You guys have a CD player behind the bar. What music do you like to play when you're working?

I play the Pretenders a lot. We play a lot of Concrete Blonde, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles. That's kind of easier for the crowd. No one ever complains about that stuff.

What do you like to play when you don't have crowds to please?

I love Ryan Adams, but people always complain it's too sad, sappy music. I've also recently fallen in love with Sia. I saw her at a music festival over the summer and she just blew me away with her performance. Her voice is just so effortless.
