5 O'Clock Somewhere: Caddyshack Pub

Columbus Alive

Even with Old Man Winter lurking all creepy-like outside, regulars were enjoying cold American lagers, shooting pool and watching the Olympics. I guess it's no surprise why: Bottled beers were $1, the TVs were plentiful and the company was cheery despite the weather.

Located in a commercial strip about a half-mile east of the Columbus Zoo, Caddyshack bills itself as a nightclub, sports bar and pub - and combines elements of all three. The only thing missing was some greasy grub. (Nothing wards off the chills like a bit of chili.)

For the record, though, the bar looks nothing like the inside of an actual caddy shack. This is a good thing. I spent many summers in them. The smell can be awful.

Instead of a wobbly card table, rusty lockers and an overbearing starter with no sense of humor, Caddyshack features a large, airy warehouse with just the right trimmings. Exposed ductwork and tasteful, metallic lights lend a sophisticated feel, while an extremely long couch along one wall does wonders in the welcoming department.

Front and center is a large ovular bar with plenty of tending space and elbow room, which should keep the spirits flowing on the pub's busier nights. DJs spin Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and Thursday features a live music open-mic.

Some bar tables also dot the space, as do a pair of pool tables, which are home to a league on Monday night. There's plenty of space to sit, but the room never feels cluttered.

They say to take any port in a storm, but whatever the conditions outside, Caddyshack is a great spot to post up.
