Arts: Volatility at MadLab
MadLab Theatre's annual fundraiser, Volatility, will be bigger and boozier this year.
The arts fest still features two stages - one with local bands like Earwig and Silo the Huskie, and the other with theater, improv and other performing groups.
But now that MadLab has moved to its larger Third Street location Downtown, there will be more space for crowds and seating, plus a row of vendors a la ComFest. Not to mention burlesque dancers.
"Everything is just kind of bigger - except for the admission," said Melissa Bair, MadLab's Volatility chairwoman.
That $5 admission goes toward a good cause. MadLab, a nonprofit arts space, hopes to use the money to finish fixing up its new building.
"Volatility will hopefully help us get a new roof before winter," Bair said. "We have about 12 buckets hidden up in our roof right now."
The group has put a tremendous amount of work into the new building in the past few months, and it hopes the new space will give the organization room to expand.
"We've done a lot of the renovations ourselves," Bair said. "We are an elbow-grease type of group, so it's been a great sort of thing for us, and we've brought a lot of new people into the group."
For the first time, there's a full liquor license for Volatility, so theater and music fans can sip vodka tonics or merlot while watching performances. And thanks to improved logistics, there will be less down time between acts.
Catch the last band of the night, local standout Earwig, who will play songs off their new album, "Gibson Under Mountain," for the first time in Columbus.
