Staff Pick: "Zombie Prom"

This off-Broadway musical tells the story of a 1950s girl who falls in love with the school bad boy. After an accident, he returns as a zombie, wishing to take his love to the prom. School leaders panic because, well, he's undead.

It has kitschy-cute songs a la atomic rock 'n' roll and is billed as a spoof on "Grease," "Bye Bye Birdie" and "The Toxic Avenger." A cool aside: The lead female role is played by Jenna Petardi, recent winner of "The CW Star" contest.

The "Zombie Prom" timing couldn't be better - and not because of the whole Halloween/zombie thing. Director Jordan Shear of Drawing Room Theatre thinks the play's message draws a parallel to the Mississippi high school that canceled prom earlier this year because a lesbian couple wanted to attend.
