Exhibit: "Faces" at Marcia Evans Gallery
Only 20 years old, CCAD student Kyle Boganwright masterfully balances beauty and grotesqueness in his art. Each of the Columbus native's colorful watercolor and pen pieces is an explosion of imagery, and all of his works make a specific statement.
In 2009, Boganwright caught the attention of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards judges, who awarded him with the same prestigious honor given to Andy Warhol back in the day.
Some of Boganwright's pieces on exhibit at Marcia Evans Gallery show his sense of humor: a hipster smoking while donning a D.A.R.E. hat, a self portrait with a word bubble that says "Mute" (pictured). All of the fairly surreal, extremely detailed images feature quirky faces - hence, the exhibition's name - and little insects buzz around on many of the pieces' colorful pastel backgrounds.
The exhibition also includes pen and ink drawings by local graphic designer Steve Kropp, who integrates graffiti-style words into his monsters' faces.
