Happy Hour: Barley's Brewing Company

Barley's is the only Columbus microbrewery that doesn't bottle its beer. Depending on your perspective, this is a blessing or a curse.

On one hand, it'd be nice to sip a glass of their fine ale on your porch when it stops raining. On the other, you're given a very good reason to visit the inviting, lived-in brewpub that gives the north end of Downtown a classy, big-city feel.

The food : Barley's honors the brewpub policy of offering a wide range of food to complement a correspondingly large selection of beers. Its menu is stocked with pastas, sandwiches, salads and even a platter of pierogi and sausage.

Narrow your field of vision every Tuesday after 3 p.m., when burgers are served at half-price.

A good number of Barley's die-hards flock to the Turkey Nut Burger ($9.29), which tops an herb-and-bird patty with pecans and spicy mayo. I opt for the Barley Burger ($8.99), which comes with a slather of sweet onions infused with the house pale ale.

All are delicious and come with a side. Try the thick, crispy steak fries or the Chipotle Slaw, which adds a saucy bite to any beef dish.

The booze : Though guests must slog through a few iffy beer-slang puns on the menu, the reason to make the trip lies in the taps, where craft-cherishing brewmasters put a collection of beers light and dark, malty and hoppy.

Seasonal selections abound, and the year-round stable is one of the best in town. During happy hour, running 3-7 p.m. weekdays, all Barley's pints cost $3.50, with an extra-special draft priced at $3.

Hopheads will enjoy the Blurry Bike IPA, a bright ale whose hops balance perfectly between pine and citrus, smell and taste. It's a great beer to cut through and accentuate anything with spice.

Those looking for something more mild and malty should sample the MacLenny's Scottish Ale. This sweet, rich and bready drink is the perfect complement to the Barley burger's onion-y sweetness and the slaw's slight kick.
