Happy Hour: Village Idiot

A good example of the "less is more" idiom is Village Idiot, a bare-bones bar near South Campus that succeeds by keeping things simple.

There's no pretension or ridiculous theme. With its graffiti-like decor and a casual atmosphere, the bar sticks to the basics and does them very well.

Village Idiot offers patrons a fantastic beer selection and happy hour specials six days a week.

The booze:

Adventurous beer drinkers will find solace at Village Idiot. A double-door cooler holds more than 50 different bottles, and the eight beers on draft change each week.

Some solid imports share shelf space in the cooler with hoppier brews such as Lagunitas IPA and Smuttynose Pale Ale. There's the underrated Shiner Bock and five different Great Lakes brews, as well as more robust fare, including the excellent Left Hand Milk Stout.

Village Idiot introduced me to a beer that has quickly joined my pantheon of favorites. I've been hooked on North Peak Brewing Company's Vicious American Wheat IPA since my first sip of it.

Truly unlike any other beer, the Vicious has a wheat beer's initial sweetness followed by a slightly bitter, hoppy finish. The best part is that it has all the flavor of an excellent craft beer but none of the heft in your belly. It's a perfect beverage for the dog days of summer.

During happy hour, craft beer bottles are a mere $2. Other specials include $3 drafts, $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon bottles and $2 well drinks.

The food:

While the bar doesn't offer food of its own, the Commonwealth Sandwich Bar next door has an order window inside Village Idiot. Commonwealth is quickly developing a reputation for serving delectable sammies made with fresh bread, in-house cured meats and top-notch cheeses.

The ham, bacon and pulled pork sandwich called Three Little Pigs is the standout. And make sure to order some of the wonderful fresh-cut fries.
