Happy Hour: The Back Room at Rivage Atlantique

Jesse Tigges, Columbus Alive

Rivage Atlantique is a popular new restaurant in downtown Worthington that's known for its upscale seafood menu. In the rear of the restaurant is a hidden gem, The Back Room. You can have a drink at the bar before or after your meal, but The Back Room has its own speakeasy-esque entrance and offers a separate gastropub menu for a nice price.

The booze:

I'm an avid seafood eater and was excited to try some of The Back Room's dishes, but their bountiful beer list is also quite an attractive aspect of the bar. The 16 taps offer a variety of craft and seasonal beers ($5-6). All are $2 off during happy hour.

My favorite was the French-style country ale Two Brothers Domaine DuPage, but there are a number of worthy options.

Domaine DuPage is robust, with a nice touch of sweetness and simple hoppiness. Though available year-round, it works quite well with the cool, crisp fall weather and a bowl of lobster bisque.

A seasonal beer that's quite exceptional is Harpoon's Octoberfest. If you enjoy Oktoberfest brews, sipping a Harpoon is a must.

Some other excellent choices include Breckenridge Vanilla Porter and Lagunitas IPA. Plus, The Back Room has more than 20 crafts and imports in bottles. Most bottles are $4-6, with a couple of high-alcohol and large bottle varieties going for about $9.

The food:

The Back Room's menu is seafood oriented but has some turf options, too. The standout for me was the Maine Lobster Bisque ($8) - the traditional recipe comes with a hint of spiciness. Topped with large clumps of lobster, it's also quite filling.

The happy hour specials include $5 lobster rolls and crab rolls, and a pizza of the day. Also recommended is the Low Country Crab Dip ($10.50)

I'll be heading back to The Back Room in the future to try the Smoked Trout Plate ($9.50) and the White Lobster Pie ($18) with basil, ricotta and extra virgin olive oil.

If you're not a seafood fan, there are also Niman Ranch beef sliders ($11) and Cuban sliders ($9).
