Columbus Alive

When the top-notch British musicians of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble visit Columbus on Saturday, they’ll perform works by three composers who were more or less screwed by their historical circumstances.

They’ll play the Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20, by Felix Mendelssohn, whose work was scorned posthumously by anti-Semites — and later banned by the Nazis — because of his family’s Jewish roots. Also on the program is Joachim Raff’s Octet in C Major, Op. 176.Like a radio hit that received too much airplay, Raff, considered one of the best composers aroundin the19thcentury, essentially became overexposed and then forgotten.

The chamber group will also perform the String Sextet by Richard Strauss, whose politics made him fall out of favor with the Nazi Party midway through its reign.

Luckily, good music endures.
