Bartender: Fritz at Woodlands Tavern
No, Magnum, P.I. hasn't become a retro fashion icon. It's Movember, a month-long movement that uses moustaches to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.
At Woodlands Tavern, the male staff members have decided to moustache up, but one bartender has decided to make a financial sacrifice in lieu of sporting whiskers. This month Fritz Fulton is donating half of all his tips to the Movember cause and other charities.
How did you decide to donate halfofyour tips to Movember?
It's not that I don't think that the way they do it is good - the reason I'm doing this is because of what they're doing. I just wanted to take it on to myself and do something. It feels good. It's kind of greedy in that way because it feels good.
What other causes are you donating to?
There's going to be a night where I donate half of my tips to a local men's shelter. I'll be giving half of my income from one or two nights to a girl whose father passed away about a month ago from cancer.
I thought it would be nice to also make a big splash for smaller organizations or groups as well.
How has the response been so far?
Really good. The first night there was a guy who put $20 on the bar when he saw my T-shirt and said, "My dad just beat prostate cancer, and he's in remission."
How much will this financial sacrificeaffect you?
I have friends if I need it. I have a little bit of savings. I'm not going to get kicked out of my apartment or go hungry.
So what ramen noodles willyou be dining on this month?
There's a spicy chicken one that's good, but you have to use Frank's hot sauce. My favorite thing to do is drop a couple eggs, break up the yolk while the water is boiling and the noodles are just done - instant protein.
If you had a moustache, what drink would be getting soaked in it?
A Bulleit Presbyterian. It's Bulleit bourbon with half club soda and half ginger ale.
