Staff Pick: Columbus Cartoonists: A Bicentennial Exhibition
The story goes that 20th century cowboy extraordinaire Will Rogers loved Columbus Dispatch cartoonist Billy Ireland so much that he once said that Ohio had two institutions — the state capitol and Ireland.
The illustrator’s humorous political commentaries and weekly full-page strip, “The Passing Show,” made him beloved by more than just Rogers. Ireland kept things local before it was in vogue, turning down offers of syndication because he didn’t want to leave Columbus or Ohio.
See artifacts from Ireland’s life and career as well as original art in this bicentennial celebration roundup of Columbus’ cartoon greats, including Milton Caniff, James Thurber (shown), Edwina Dumm, Doc Goodwin and others.
