Bar profile: Greek Street Tavern

Jesse Tigges, Columbus Alive

Upper Arlington is a nice place to live, but it's not exactly the first neighborhood that comes to mind when you're looking for someplace hip to get a drink. Until now.

About a month ago Greek Street Tavern opened in the Kingsdale Center, right next to the massive Giant Eagle Market District, giving the neighborhood access to a cool little bar and restaurant.

Taking over the former Burgers, Dogs and Fries space, Greek Street has done a commendable job renovating. A nice-sized wood bar is accompanied by tables and booths. The dimmed lighting and comfy bar stools will make even the most discerning barfly feel right at home.

When quitting time rolls around - I'd call it happy hour, but Greek Street rolls that out at 2 p.m. - those stools start to fill up. The crowd includes everyone from neighborhood businessmen sipping Johnnie Walker Blue ($30) to young professionals grabbing a beer and discussing music, sports, etc.

The draft list is small but offers both hoppy (Great Lakes Burning River Pale Ale, Southern Tier 2XIPA) and robust (Founders Breakfast Stout) crafts ($4.50-$5). Everyone's favorite Keystone State lager, Yuengling, is always $2.

There are a dozen or so bottles of the traditional domestic lagers and imports, as well as a couple of Greek options, Mythos and Alfa. The wine list also has plenty of options, and most are available by the glass and bottle.

Currently the bar staff is finalizing a cocktail menu, but if you can think of it the bartenders can make it. Speaking of the bar staff, it's a collection of young, attractive types who you may recognize from trendy hangouts such as Little Palace, Third & Hollywood and Lindey's.

Greek Street Tavern's kitchen is open for lunch and dinner with a sizeable menu of Greek dishes. All the usual suspects are present - moussaka and pastitcio entrees ($11), hummus ($5.50) and spanakopita ($4) appetizers - as well as burgers ($8) and some linguini and penne dishes ($11-$12). There are also a number of more than respectable gyro options ($6-$7).
