Happy Hour review: Bossy Grrl's Pin Up Joint

Abernathy Miller, Columbus Alive

On a recent Monday, I reluctantly faced the cold to check out the happy hour scene at the North Campus honky-tonk, Bossy Grrl's Pin Up Joint. I had been to the bar before, but never for the Monday Mayhem Burlesque show by the Sex Kitten Purr-lesque group. Typically I spend Monday watching "Wife Swap" re-runs and doing laundry. After my night at Bossy Grrl's however, the whites might have to wait until Tuesday. Here is a run-down of my happy hour adventure.

Drink specials: 3outof 5

Bossy Grrl's scores major points for the wallet-friendly happy hour prices. Select beers are $1 and shots of Fireball go for $3, making it easy to get blitzed on a budget. However, the selection of bargain-basement booze isn't the best. If you want something other than beer and whiskey, you're going to pay regular prices. Also, due to some weird liquor license regulation, they don't carry wine or champagne. Bummer, right? Beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

Entertainment: 4 out of 5

The show got underway around 10 p.m. It got weird fast. A glamazon in a pink wig who called herself "Trulie Scrumptious" took the stage dressed in a Japanese maid outfit constructed completely out of paper. She writhed around seductively as an awkward male assistant cut parts of her costume off. A few less-experienced dancers performed, followed by a drag king who introduced himself as Dick Vicious. Dick gave a spirited rendition of a song with an opening monologue I'd never heard, which was met instantly with roaring applause. You're going to be hard-pressed to find a wilder night out so early in the work week anywhere else in the city.

Atmosphere: 3.5 out of 5

I can image there is a girl in the Short North feeling pretty "surly" that Bossy Grrl's sort of stole her look. That being said, I love that Bossy Grrl's does kitsch like a John Waters movie. Chandeliers draped with bras and jewels project dim light on the heaving breasts of the pin-up photos that line the walls. It's like having a private party in your Pinterest-obsessed friend's boudoir-themed basement bar.

Overall experience: 4 out of 5

I'm giving Bossy Grrl's Pin Up Joint 4 out of 5 because despite it being the worst day of the week, I had the best time - and I got home before my fairy godmother could turn my Mercury into a pumpkin.
