Women of Color Holiday Market flowers at Zora's House

LC Johnson

LC Johnson founded Zora’s House in 2018 as both a safe space for women of color and a launching point for those within that community, giving them a place to operate free from “the burden of representation, tokenism and micro-aggressions,” as she explained in a December 2018 Alive interview.

Some of the fruits of that creative and cultural freedom will be available for purchase when Zora’s House holds its annual Women of Color Holiday Market on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The market, which takes place at Zora’s House, located at 1311 Summit St. in Weinland Park, will feature products created solely by women of color, including jewelry, candles, clothing and more. (See a full list of vendors below.)

The Holiday Market is an extension of the Zora’s House mission, which plays out across community dinners, workshops and a monthly Writing Circle, among other pursuits.

“I think about Zora’s House like a people incubator,” Johnson said in 2018.

Alternately, the space could be considered a greenhouse, allowing room for its residents to flower and grow free from outside interference, and ultimately creating a more colorful, vivid cultural landscape for the entirety of Columbus.
