Arts preview: July Gallery Hop features tribute to circuses

Considering that Friday is kind of a freebie holiday, use it to sleep off your Independence Day hangover so you can attend Saturday’s Gallery Hop.

The highlight for this month’s Hop, where the Short North Arts District’s shops and galleries stay open later than usual, is a pop-up gallery at the space beside the Mikey’s food truck (where 83 Gallery used to be).

Called Dr. Danga Grimaldi’s Art Gallery and Emporium, the space will become a shrine to circus ephemera, art, costume sales and aerial performances. Hosted by Columbus’ stilt dance troupe, Dr. Danga Grimaldi Circus, the show is a tribute to its artistic director, Eoin O’Brien.

O’Brien is a third-generation circus performer with a knack for poetry and filmmaking. To him, vaudeville and circus acts are not stunts but tools for his artistic vision and expression. For more than a decade, his troupe has merged old-school circus act techniques (juggling, trapeze work, fire eating, etc.) with contemporary music, lighting and design elements.

Chilling in a modern-day big top on a hot summer day? Yes, please.
