Arts preview: Famed photographer Gregory Heisler to sign books Saturday

Jesse Tigges, Columbus Alive

This Saturday offers the chance to meet and get a book signed by one of the most prolific and widely respected photographers. Gregory Heisler, best known for his evocative portrait work that has appeared on the pages and covers of Time, Rolling Stone, GQ, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, Fortune and many more, recently released his first book, "50 Portraits."

Drawing from the many portraits he's taken for magazines, Heisler compiled 50 that capture the depth and breadth of his work. He also spent more than two years adding descriptions to the portraits explaining why he shot the subjects in that manner.

"What I had always wanted as a person who buys, reads and collects photography books is [something] that was actually a picture book … but where the photographer actually tells me what the creative process is," Heisler said. "I wanted to let people in to the creative process behind each picture, and not so much the how-to, but the why."

It's also a rare book signing for Heisler, who usually only schedules these to coincide with discussions he's giving. Heisler is visiting in-laws in Columbus, and was kind enough to participate in the event.
