EDITOR'S PICKS: 14 things to do this Memorial Day weekend

Staff Writer
Columbus Alive

This weekend could get weird. Everything from UFO Network meetings to Kenny Rogers in a racino is on the table. As the Gambler himself says, you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. How weird it gets is up to your decision-making. As always, here's what I'd do if I could be everywhere all the time.

The McIntosh cocktail at Denmark on High

It's not named after me, but I don't care. It's enough to get me there, even if I'm not much of a McIntosh apple kinda guy. Besides, sipping a quality cocktail sounds like the perfect way to spend the happy hour (or two) prior to Alive's summer kickoff concert featuring The Girls!, The Wet Darlings and The Receiver.

Reader Bradley Jordan noted on our website: "So my three favorite local bands are playing, I can get some fish tacos from Junior's, AND my favorite brewer will be selling delicious beverages on a sunny day AND it's free to get in? I feel like you guys are just messin' with me..." We're not, Bradley. Some things aren't too good to be true.

Beer tour via COTA's CBus

This isn't, like, a real thing, an official event. But some friends came up with this brilliant idea, and I'll be, hopefully, tagging along Saturday. The idea is this: Hop on the CBus, which is free, and let it you take you for a tour of many great watering holes around the Downtown, Short North, Brewery District area. Do you know how many breweries/beer bars fall within a five-mile stretch that CBus covers? Here are some examples: North High Brewing, Seventh Son Brewing, Elevator Brewing Company, Gordon Biersch, Columbus Brewing Co., Barley's Brewing Co., World of Beer and Wolf's Ridge. That doesn't even take into consideration quality bars like St. James, Little Rock, House Beer, Pint House, etc.

Kenny Rogers at Scioto Downs Racino

The allure of listening to Kenny Rogers sing "The Gambler" at a casino is too strong to pass up. Plus, there's never been a more practical time to utilize this website: Yes, it's real.
