La Traviata

Giuseppe Verdi's classic piece of operatic literature gets a twist, as director Mary Birnbaum updates the setting to modern-day Paris. "La Traviata" (The Fallen Woman) is the story of Violetta, played here by soprano Andrea Shokery, a carefree and wealthy courtesan who finds that true love challenges the comfortable conventions of the lifestyle to which she had become accustomed. This being opera (spoiler alert), someone dies. Rossen Milanov, Columbus Symphony Orchestra music director, makes his Opera Columbus debut on the podium.
