June Gallery Hop preview: Three to see

"Rider, 1860" by Adam Brouilette

Of course there are more than three things to see and do at this Saturday's Short North Gallery Hop, but you gotta start somewhere. Visit shortnorth.org for more information.

"Unceremonious Numbers," Adam Brouillette, Rivet

A ninth anniversary and a 36th birthday. Per Columbus artist Adam Brouillette, nobody makes a big deal out of those. Yet here is Rivet owner Laura Kuenzli marking said anniversary for her gallery with a solo exhibition of work by Brouillette, who also happens to be turning 36 on Saturday.

Maybe 50 is a worthy number – Brouillette plans to exhibit 50 new smaller-scale pieces. "It's been an exercise for different kinds of practice," he said, including color palette, lines and shadow. "When you make 50 pieces really quick, it's a chance to play around and experiment."

Brouillette's familiar cartoon-y characters still take center stage, but he's thinking differently about how they look and what they say. "My characters have evolved a lot since I started making them in 2002 when they were just kind of stick figures," Brouillette said. "Some are rooted in reality. Some are my reaction to something - often something social, political or scientific. And some come out of the Columbus community."

The pieces also mark a shift from his recent large-scale work. Kuenzli is glad to feature his work on such a non-momentous occasion.

"I've known Adam these last nine years as a mentor and advocate, as well as an artist," she said. "I've always liked his character designs."

Opening reception 7-10 p.m. Saturday, June 4

1200 N. High St., Short North

"Change Starts Here," former Rigsby's

The Short North Alliance, in partnership with Warhol & Wall Street and the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board, welcome this exhibition of artwork related to the Change Starts Here campaign, which encourages partnerships to improve relations between communities and police. This "Change Starts Here" exhibition features work by Ohio photographer Trey Barkett and a photo booth in which patrons can make and share their own "Change starts with…" statements.

"This is really special," Short North Alliance Executive Director Betsy Pandora said. "We are transforming the former Rigsby's location into a gallery for one night for this temporary exhibition."

5-10 p.m. Saturday, June 4

698 N. High St., Short North

"Summer Show of Abstracts," Marcia Evans Gallery

Doesn't it feel good to read that there's a summer exhibition this weekend? You've got Marcia Evans to thank.

"Summer Show of Abstracts" features painting and mixed-media works by local artists, including Ellis Beckwith, Kate Morgan, Annette Poitau, Robert Tavani, Roger Williams and more. The show will remain on view through Aug. 28. By then you probably won't crave the "summer" theme as much.

Opening reception, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, June 3

8 E. Lincoln St., Short North
