Arts preview: Finding Oz

The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus will present an original musical program on the topic of bullying in three hometown performances before taking the performance to the quadrennial GALA Choruses Festival in Denver.

"Finding Oz" was created by staff and members of the CGMC using songs from "The Wizard of Oz," "The Wiz," "Wicked," "The Boy from Oz" and songs from the catalog of Judy Garland. The story of bullying takes place at a high school reunion 20 years in the future and is woven together using staging, choreography and video sequences in the style of social media posts.

"So much bullying is done now on social media," chorus member Jason Bockis said. "So we used those elements to tie the story together."

Songs such as "What is This Feeling?" from "Wicked," "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News" from "The Wiz" and the classic "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" help to tell the story of three characters all looking back on how bullying affected their lives.

"We've all been bullied in one way or another," director Tim Sarsany said. "We all have our own stories."
