Arts preview: Opera on the Edge

Jim Fischer

Opera Columbus and Shadowbox Live's Opera on the Edge coproduction addresses barriers - real or perceived - of language, location and length. The collaboration resets operas for new audiences, with spoken dialogue (in English, just like the singing), abridged length (productions run about an hour) and performances taking place in an intimate setting among restaurant patrons.

The latest offering is Puccini's "La Boheme," a masterwork of operatic literature that has inspired numerous "based-on" stories, including Broadway smash "Rent."

In addition to stagings at Shadowbox, Opera on the Edge will have a handful of shows at The Refectory.
