Arts preview: 'Joy'

The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus wants to make sure your holiday season includes a little joy.

As in "Joy," the annual CGMC holiday concert, celebrating all that's peaceful, hopeful and fun at the season.

"Our message through the holidays is the same as anyone's, to remember your fellow humans and to treasure these times," director Tim Sarsany said. "We want to sing things that will resonate, although they may resonate a little bit differently since we're a gay chorus.

"We try to do that for all of our concerts, but especially lately we want to share that message."

Recognizing the varied backgrounds of its audience members, the chorus performs songs particular to the holidays but also apt for the setting. This year's repertoire includes a medley of Beach Boys Christmas songs, Andrea Bocelli's "The Prayer," and the comic "Recycle the Fruitcake."

Sarsany said a performance of the David Bowie-Bing Crosby Duet "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" is particularly apt. "If you read the text, that's a glimpse of what's going on today," he said.

The weekend includes an additional Sunday afternoon concert at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Linworth.
