“Frank Zappa Finer Moments” by Bill Miller

As a kid, Bill Miller's sketch books and doodles often featured images of musician Frank Zappa. As an adult, Miller worked with Zappa's widow to create album covers for posthumous releases Congress Shall Make No Law… and Finer Moments.

Lindsay Gallery acquired the original artworks from Gail Zappa's estate and will feature them alongside a third piece Miller did for the Zappa family. “Vinyl Moments,” which opens Friday, Oct. 6, is the first time all three will be displayed publicly together. This exhibition will also include new work by Miller.

A collage artist, Miller has used vintage linoleum flooring as his medium for nearly 20 years. Initially inspired by the material's “impressionistic” look, Miller also found purpose in the history of the material and the places it was used.

“I'm a blue-collar kid from Cleveland, so [discarded linoleum] speaks to lost communities. It's connected to a history, a common memory,” Miller said by phone. “The material is beautiful, and its history just enhanced my identification with it.”
