Tim Veach is handing over the keys to Columbus Dance Theatre this weekend and letting the audience choreograph the show.

Sort of.

The first act of CDT's “A-Z” is the presentation of 26 (thus, “A-Z”) choreographed “phrases” made by Veach, the company's artistic director. Pianist Bradley Sowash will also perform three original compositions. At the end of the act, the audience will vote on its 10 favorite phrases and its top musical selection. During intermission, Veach will create a brand-new dance work by assembling the 10 phrases together, using a varied cast of CDT dancers. This work will be performed to the winning composition as the program's second act.

“It's almost like the way a [visual] artist would make [a collage],” Veach said. “In trying to put together two particular phrases, it can be something I might not, as a choreographer, have thought of doing.”

As for the compressed time to assemble and teach the work, Veach said, “It's a little bit of stress, but super fun.”
