“Cinema, Expanded,” an installation and series of performances and programs organized by Ohio State University Department of Art professor Roger Beebe, investigates what can be done with the moving image beyond the traditional theatrical presentation.

“We're asking what it means to do cinema in a gallery space versus in a traditional black box theater,” Beebe said. “There are issues of time and how an audience is engaged. We're also using some pre-cinematic devices.”

Performances have included local and national moving-image artists. Before the exhibition closes on Thursday, Nov. 29, the space will host British-Australian artist Sally Golding on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and the Student Abstract Loop Show on Monday, Nov. 26. The events, Beebe said, change the traditional screening into an installation.

“There's this great, beautiful chaos,” Beebe said of the student show. “The assignment was an open shell and the students (who come from a variety of disciplines, Beebe said) each did their own investigation. I hoped it would surprise me, and it has.”
