Arts preview: 'An Expression of Place'
If you're visiting Bexley's Art Access Gallery to check out the new exhibition of work by Columbus painter Joe Lombardo and you hear one of the paintings holler out “Hey!” to you from the wall, it's cool – that's what Lombardo wants to happen.
“I've always used bright, exaggerated colors, and for this show, I was really trying to crank up the color,” Lombardo said in a recent phone interview. “I want the paintings to have a personality, to be joyful and loud. I'm kinda like that as a person.”
Lombardo's landscape work began during his sophomore year at CCAD, a natural combination of two of his favorite things.
“I like to be outside, hiking or sitting outside, and looking at things. When I discovered plein air painting, I was like, ‘This is it,'” he said.
“An Expression of Place” represents work in a handful of distinct series, united by both Lombardo's concern for process as well as his desire to create a connection to different places.
“Whether it's urban or rural, I look at everything as a painter. The world around me leads me to paint. This is an exploration and expression of those places,” he said.
The show continues through Jan. 15
