Daily Distraction: Dave Chappelle goes 27 minutes on 8:46
Dave Chappelle's searing new special, "8:46," just released by Netflix via its comedy YouTube channel, Netflix Is a Joke, takes its title from the amount of time that Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck before Floyd died.
Recorded June 6 near Chappelle's home in Yellow Springs, the set is less a comedy special than essential, stirring social commentary. Throughout, Chappelle discusses numerous high-profile incidents of violence against black Americans, including the killings of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner, among others.
The set opens with Chappelle recounting the fear he felt when he experienced a 35-second earthquake in the early '90s, relating it to the terror Floyd must have felt in those endless minutes Chauvin pressed his knee into his neck.
"I can't get that number out of my head," Chappelle says of 8:46, "because it was my time of birth on my birth certificate."
