Lunch: The Inn Between
The Inn Between is tucked away in a Downtown alley, one of those off-the-beaten-path kinds of places you never think about until you stumble upon it.
I happen to stumble upon it nearly every day - it's located on the bottom floor of my parking garage, the Capital Plaza garage near the intersection of Broad and South Fourth streets. And yet I still often forget about it when picking a lunch spot, which is a shame.
The specialty here is greasy pub fare served in gigantic portions. Or, as the Inn amusingly advertises it: "the best lunch you'll ever have in a parking garage!"
It's certainly nicer looking than you'd expect for a restaurant in a parking garage. The well-worn decor is almost nautical, with lots of shiny wood and plenty of windows.
The restaurant recently came under new ownership, and the menu has been tweaked a bit but still features longtime favorite dishes like the Rumplemeyer ($8.45), a BLT made special with the addition of the Inn's housemade chicken salad.
Patty Melt, $8.25
The Rumplemeyer's great, as is a massive, super-saucy Buffalo Chicken sandwich. But they both clock in above the $10 mark when you add in tax and tip. Luckily there are plenty of cheaper options.
The Patty Melt is one of the best burgers I've found on the Downtown lunch scene. It's menu-described as "fresh ground beef," and its thick, irregular, hand-pattied appearance lends credence to that claim.
The burger is served on buttery rye toast, and on top is a melange of grilled mushrooms and red onions bound together in Thousand Island dressing, plus a layer of melty Swiss.
Sandwiches come with a choice of fries, chips, coleslaw, applesauce or cottage cheese. Go for the chips, which are surprisingly great made-fresh kettle chips. They're warm, lightly salted and perfectly crispy, with a few slightly undercooked ones thrown in for good measure.
