Bar profile: The Pub Out Back has the friendly charm of a pub-next-door
Tucked behind the businesses, restaurants and shops on High Street in Olde Worthington is a hidden little watering hole appropriately called The Pub Out Back. Even though it's been open since New Year's Eve 2012 it's quite possible many (even Worthington residents) weren't aware the pub was back there.
The two-room haunt fits appropriately in the neighborhood; it's welcoming and quaint with a surprisingly fun atmosphere. The humble-sized space is part neighborhood bar, speakeasy and sports bar, decked out in dark woods and burgundy-colored walls, lots of flat screen TVs and low lighting.
The centerpiece is a bar in the front room where regulars gather, commiserate and celebrate. It's quite the happening spot during happy hour with some colorful characters, friendly gentlemen happy to "put that on my tab" and ladies laughing over glasses of wine. Those sitting around the bar are easily within earshot of each other and conversations flow freely among everyone.
A second room in the back features a couple tables and TVs, tabletop shuffleboard (a bar game too rarely found) and an authentic steel-tip dartboard (also too rarely found). It's the ideal space for an assembly of pig-skin fanatics or a larger group.
Perhaps the most inviting aspect of The Pub Out Back are the thrifty libations. During happy hour (4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday) all domestic bottles, drafts, wines and well liquors are $.75 off, although the discount is hardly needed. Unless your choice of poison is of the premium variety, most tabs will come in under $10.
Drafts are a couple bucks for the domestic staples (Bud Light, Yuengling) and only a buck more for crafts (a decent, if small selection between a couple IPAs and seasonals). Daily cocktails and shots are offered as bartender's choice specials.
On the grub side, The Pub Out Back has food delivered from the nearby Worthington Pizza Primo. All the standard options - pizza, wings, subs and snacks - are available.
