Roundup: Queuing for Columbus BBQ

While the Jazz & Ribs Fest is still a couple weeks away (July 22-24 - mark your calendars!), these summer days already have us thinking about ribs and pulled pork and smoked sausages. If you're feeling like us, we suggest you pregame the riverfront festival by queuing up for some BBQ at one of these joints.

Ray Ray's Hog Pit, Old North

If we had to declare a King of Barbecue for Columbus, we'd probably nominate James "Ray Ray" Anderson for the role. Anderson's experience smoking some of the city's best ribs and grass-fed brisket has led him to establish Anderson Farms in Granville, where he raises the hogs to use at his truck. You can't go wrong with his St. Louis spare ribs, his pulled pork, his beef brisket, or, well, any of it.

Land Yacht BBQ

Land Yacht has made a name for itself by serving top-notch barbecue out of its repurposed 1963 Airstream Overlander Land Yacht trailer. It nails the standards like pulled pork and beef brisket, but also gets creative with items like jalapeno smoked sausage, lamb bacon mac & cheese and (surprise!) veggie burgers.

B & K Smokehouse, Olde Towne East

B & K has been quietly earning rave reviews for its menu of smoked meats and its welcoming service. The joint offers everything from chicken wings to smoked turkey sandwiches to pulled pork, but its specialty is big, fall-off-the-bone tender turkey ribs.

Smokehouse Brewing, Grandview

The obvious benefit of dining at Smokehouse is getting to sip house beers while you nosh on specialties like smoked and grilled wings. Pints of Centennial IPA or Death Trap Tripel pair perfectly with big plates of St. Louis spareribs, hickory-smoked chicken or sliced beef brisket.

Barrel & Boar, multiple locations

Recently renamed from Holy Smoke BBQ, Barrel & Boar has solidified its spot in the North Market serving up classics like wings, ribs and sandwiches loaded with brisket, pork and chicken. The business has expanded to full service sit-downs in Gahanna and Newark, with bigger menus incorporating pork shoulder, smoked kielbasa, big plates of ribs and more.

Bob's Backyard Barbecue

Bob's truck has been making the rounds across Franklin County this summer. It features all the requisite smoked meats, plus classic sides like baked sweet potatoes and corn casserole. The truck even delves into breakfast with dishes like brisket biscuits and gravy and pulled pork hash.
