Roundup: Irish dishes to celebrate St. Patrick's Day

Nicholas Dekker

St. Patrick's Day is ubiquitous for its green beer, parades and shamrocks. And every bar and restaurant — Irish-themed or not — will be hosting festivities this week. No matter your heritage, you can join in the celebrations with these five St. Patrick's Day specials.

Full Irish Breakfast at Fado Irish Pub

It's hard to find a full traditional Irish breakfast in Columbus, and Fado has one of the best options. The massive breakfast plate features fried eggs, real Irish bangers, back bacon, stewed mushrooms and tomatoes, soda bread and both white and black puddings.

Shamrock Balls at Smokehouse Brewing

Smokehouse continues its annual tradition of serving smoked corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day. This year the menu also includes Shamrock Balls: sauerkraut balls made with Swiss cheese and smoked corned beef. Pair it with a pint of Red Molly Irish red ale.

Early Breakfast at O'Reilly's

As you might expect of any pub or neighborhood dive with an Irish-sounding name, O'Reilly's will be mobbed on St. Patrick's Day. That morning, the Clintonville institution will open at 7 a.m. for breakfast, serving until 11 a.m. After that, it's an Irish-only menu of corned beef and cabbage, shepherd's pie and Irish stew, all paired with two-dollar green beer.

Patty Cakes at Hang Over Easy

All this week Hang Over Easy — a close-to-campus spot known for good breakfast grub and drinks — is serving Patty Cakes: Guinness pancakes with a Bailey's cream cheese icing.

Irish Breakfast 2.0 at Dempsey's Food & Spirits

Dempsey's Downtown offers one of the other solid Irish breakfast options in town. The Irish Breakfast 2.0 features a modern take on the classic, with a bread pudding French toast, sausage patties, potatoes, scrambled eggs with Irish cheddar and a Jameson salted caramel. At Dempsey's, you can pre-game the holiday with live music the night before. On St. Patrick's Day, the bar features a full day of music, including visits from the Shamrock Club Pipe & Drums and the Columbus Police and Fire Pipe & Drums.
