On Tap: Juicy Brews Fest

Nicholas Dekker

Hop Culture magazine has been hosting a series of tastings, dinners, can releases and live music at The Crest Gastropub in Clintonville all week. Originally scheduled as a one-day fest on Sunday, Feb. 25, the festivities expanded to include seven days of events beginning Monday, Feb. 19.

Founded by Kenny Gould and Travis Smith,Hop Culture celebrated its first anniversary last month. The publication hosted the initial Juicy Brews festival in Pittsburgh. When that sold out, Gould and Smith took the event to New York City and met success there. Columbus is the third stop, and following this week's events, the festival will head to Tucson, Arizona, and Durham, North Carolina, this spring.

“Hazy IPAs are really hot right now. That's what people want to drink,” said Olivia Hurley ofHop Culture. “But we leave it up to interpretation — whatever the breweries are psyched to bring. They tend to bring more hazy IPAs, fruit-forward beers and sours, but they bring a variety.”

Some of the week's remaining highlights:

Thursday: Rhythm'n Brews. Hoof Hearted Brewing and Jackie O's pair DJs with hazy beers. Thom Lessner, creator of Hoof Hearted's cartoonish branding, and John Clift from Jackie O's will be on hand spinning records while both breweries offer IPAs, blonde ales and farmhouse ales for tasting.

Friday: Winter Can Release. Four breweries — Industrial Arts Brewing out of Garnerville, New York; Marz Community Brewing from Chicago; Burial Beer Co. from Asheville, North Carolina; and Singlecut Beersmiths from Queens, New York — will be releasing a variety of beers. No tickets are necessary for the event, which kicks off at 5 p.m.

Saturday: Juicy Brews Sonic Vibrations. A tap takeover at TRISM features a dance party and brews from Jackie O's, Wolf's Ridge, Homestead Beer Co., Dancing Gnome, DankHouse Brewing, Against the Grain and others.

The capstone event is Sunday's festival at The Crest. Guests can sample from the 18 breweries in attendance. There are two ticketed sessions, one from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the other from 3-6 p.m. Hoof Hearted, Seventh Son, Wolf's Ridge and Columbus Brewing Company will represent Columbus, while other Ohio breweries include Jackie O's, JAFB Wooster, Sixth Sense and Streetside. Out-of-state offerings hail from Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri.

Hop Culture is also debuting a trading area, where beer aficionados can bringup to two four-packs, four growlers/crowlers or four 750 ml bottles to trade.
